If you’re looking to find a simple low-cost security option and you’re looking for a low-cost security solution, the suite integrated into Windows 10 or 11 is an excellent option. It’s also known as Windows Security or Microsoft Defender and it comes with security for antivirus, a firewall, device monitoring, kid protection (you can limit what your children are allowed to do online) and many other features.

In addition to the standard malware detection, neutralization and prevention capabilities, it also has a password manager and anti-phishing tools. Its firewall can monitor connections to and from the outside including Wi-Fi networks. It also has an option to allow you to see detailed information on suspicious connections.

In our tests it did a great job of blocking harmful downloads and phishing websites. Its reputation-based protection system uses a huge database online to assign apps and websites reputation scores. Programs with low scores are immediately removed. It also provides security against exploits, which guards against attacks attempting to change the settings of your computer.

However, while it’s a good product overall, it lacks the malware detection rates of standalone competitors like Norton or Bitdefender. Although it does include the password manager, it doesn’t include other valuable extras like an optimizer for your PC or a VPN. The customer support options are extensive. There’s a vast community with extensive FAQs and forums as well as a variety of ways to reach an expert tech support via email or live chat.
